Rector's Rhetoric - August 2014

Posted by Father John Norvell on August 01, 2014 0 Comments

As we come to the end of the summer months, we have so much for which to be thankful — time spent in re-creation, a summer that proved to be quite mild by Oklahoma standards, and the revival of ministries that have lain dormant for a time. Our choir, EfM, our men’s group, St. Margaret’s Guild, will be starting up soon. Over the summer I’ve been more involved in the revitalization of what was formerly known as United Campus Ministry but is now a campus ministry affiliated with the Wesley Foundation. We have a new director, Janie Wilson. Janie comes to us from the Wesley Foundation at OU where she spent five years as their director. She has a wealth of experience and a cache of energy that has everyone excited and ready to work. Janie is no stranger to Ada either, as she was once the youth minister at First Presbyterian Church of Ada. Several denominations are involved in this ecumenical work, including The First Methodist Church of Ada, The First Presbyterian Church, The Episcopal Church, The First Christian Church, and others. Our great hope is to reach out to East Central University students in a way that I certainly never experienced when I was in college (or maybe I just wasn’t aware of what was out there). Our mission for this ministry has been and will always be “To know Christ, and to make Christ known.” There will be worship opportunities, group study, outreach, and pastoral care offered throughout the year, and I’m excited to see how this new incarnation will take shape. Of course, none of that will be possible without a strong, united, and supportive board of members representing affiliated churches. We have a lot of work ahead, funds to raise, students to meet. If you have a desire to minister to college students through our Wesley board, by all means, let’s talk. We need to be represented. There are other ways that one can be supportive too. We have the 1230 Club that allows us to make financial contributions of $30/month. This is an essential part of what it will take to have a vital ministry at East Central in the coming year, and you can be a part of it with generous offerings of time, talent, and treasure. Come see me.
